it is on the bad moments when the real friendship arrives. and here i am trying to help you now. i am a portuguese citizen, born in lisbon, but with my “roots” at castelo-branco, also part of my country (not spain although with great friends from there).
i don`t know if you have already studied the 15th and 16th real history of prince henry “the navigator”, vasco da gama, pedro Álvares de cabral, bartolomeu dias etc.. one thing you should remember is that at that time, portugal and spain just spited the world in two by signing the famous “tratado de tordesilhas” in spain, against the will of the pope of that time.
one thing that is still a great secret is that columbus was a portuguese spy at the service of the catholic kingdom of queen isabella. the portuguese just wanted the finding of the maritime way to india (orient not occident) in order to spread the catholic faith, and of course to arrange the deal of the spices. for instance the people from australia just proved that the portuguese were the first to reach that country (maldives also).
